Junius

The name “Junius” comes from an anonymous 18th-century political writer, a nod to the power of ideas outlasting identity. That sense of depth and anonymity mirrors the band’s approach to music. For over two decades, the Boston-based group has resisted easy categorization, moving fluidly between intensity and restraint, balancing weight with melody. Often labeled post-metal, their sound prioritizes atmosphere, movement, and emotional lift over sheer aggression.

Sotera (Prosthetic Records) marks Junius’ first full-length in nearly a decade, following 2017’s Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light. Produced by Joseph E. Martinez and Tom Syrowski (Mastodon, Blackberry Smoke), the album represents a creative rebirth. Where earlier work explored cosmic and existential themes, Sotera centers on transformation through the divine feminine. The title, meaning “savior” or “protector” in Greek, reflects a broader meditation on balance, renewal, and spiritual evolution.

The album draws on mythological figures such as Hekate, Medea, and Lucifera, framing transformation as both ritual and reckoning. Lead single “Initiatrix” captures this core idea—stepping willingly into change and accepting its consequences.

Sonically, Sotera blends ambient textures, shoegaze elements, and metallic weight into something expansive and immersive. With a refreshed lineup and renewed perspective, Junius embraces a more open, less rigid creative process, resulting in a work that feels both cohesive and liberated.
